THE FLOOD
In the rainy season, sometimes canals and rivers overflow their banks. As a result, waters rush into towns and villages on both sides. Very soon fields, roads and small houses go under water. This great rise of water is known as a flood . The flood may occur in different ways. Continuous heavy rain for days together often results in a flood. It is also caused by the breaking of the banks of a river or by release of excessive water from a barrage. Floods cause a great deal of damage to people and property. Standing paddy crops in the field are greatly affected as they go under water. Thatched and mud houses are completely destroyed. Sometimes cattle are washed off and lose their lives. Many people are swept away by the strong current of the flood water and many die when houses collapse on them. As a result, drinking water gets polluted and enteric disease like cholera, diarrhoea and dysentery break out in the flood hit areas. Relief and rescue operations start immediately. The Government and different social welfare organizations provide food and clothes to the flood affected people. The flood is a great evil. But it has its uses. It washes away all impurities and makes the land fertile.
